Ellen Suhr

PORTFOLIO IN PRINT • SPRING 2020
I am an interdisciplinary artist working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I work in audiovisual, print, and graphic media and my practice often crosses disciplines and forms. My printmaking practice centers on screen, linoleum relief, and intaglio plates and my thematic concerns include self-interrogation, object as metaphor, and evolving representations of self.

More

american tgirl

I plan to create a portfolio of print and audiovisual media accessing constructions of oppression, alienation, and suffering under neoliberal capitalism through the hands of a struggling young trans girl in the United States. I plan to draw from print’s rich history of agitprop, underground publication, and queer visibility to inform my work, and continue to interrogate my stylistic inspirations from Warhol to Kollwitz.

Process notes from Ellen:
Keeping the screens' fine details & halftones printing evenly and clean between pulls was difficult and my edition suffered because of it. However, I was happy with my color mixing and many of the final prints

Process notes from Ellen:
I was really happy with my registration & color mixing on this one. I knew the inks were already too saturated so I opted to skip the Key layer because CMY let the full range of hue through without any potential muddying of a black layer (I noticed this last semester with a sunset print.

Process notes from Ellen:
I've done about 1 self-portrait print per year and several sketches of other sorts, it's become an important part of my exploration of self-imaging. It felt like the right time to finally do one smiling. I didn't want to over carve the block, but still establish a good black/white/hatching separation on the block.
